If Obama fails as President, I believe that the conservative movement of the Republican party will take the Presidency in 2012. Leading them, is former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich. Buzz has it that Newt is preparing for a run in the event Obama crashes and burns. He is clearly a talented conservative thinker, but as a politician had a mixed performance. Either way, he sure would make an interesting, if divisive and highly controversial, President (note that I am not endorsing Newt for this office). I strongly recommend this recent article / profile on Newt:
The Anti-Obama? (
New York Times Magazine, 3/1/09).
When George W. Bush was reelected in 2004, the warnings came out: if Bush fails, Hillary Clinton will become the next President. Well those doomsayers were right, except that we have Obama instead of Hillary! Regardless, the question is now on the shoulders of Democrats and liberals: do they rein in Obama’s liberal agenda in order to stave off the risk of spectacular failure and the resulting ascendancy of the conservative movement? I doubt they perceive it yet in these terms, but they may want to soon start to.

I like Newt, but he has too much baggage to run. I think he could help, but if the GOP was smart, and no one ever accused them of being smart, they need to have someone Reagan-like.
