Why I am Against Obama-mania

Obama-mania is still in full swing.  Everybody loves Obama, and his followers think that he is the best thing to happen since time immemorial.  Every word he says inspires millions.

This is wrong.  Obama is a politician.  Yes, he may represent and lot of nice things to a lot of people, and his speeches may be brilliant, but to date, he has used all these attributes for one thing only — to become the President of the United States!  All politicians are self-promoters, something which is required to be elected and remain so (though most are like this by nature) .  I personally find relentless self-promotion uninspiring.

I will be the first to say that we should all admire and venerate Obama if and when he succeeds at becoming a great President.  But until then, the correct thing to do is to judge him by what he does, not by what we hope and dream he will do.  And so far, in the U.S. Senate and Illinois State Senate, Obama’s record of accomplishment is thin.  Let’s see how that changes now that he is President.

In our society, so many people advance themselves not from actual accomplishment, but by procedure — making the right friends, being at the right place in the right time, making the right connections, relentless self-promotion, etc.  To make it big in finance as in politics, one needs to use these tactics.  Since these maneuvers have little to no bearing on actual competence or accomplishment, it is no wonder that all these well-connected finance types (and politicians!) wrecked our economy.
