Hamas Rockets “Nagging” Israel
When Hamas started firing rockets into Israel after the truce ended, I didn’t hear a peep out of the world community regarding a cease fire. It is only after Israel responds, that its reaction is deemed disproportionate or otherwise cranky, to a provocation that really is no big deal. The Peacemakers simply don’t get it (save the U.S.). See my 12/29/08 Post, Gaza Ablaze — the 21st Century World “Peacemakers” Fail Again. So it goes beyond the selfishness of the Peacemakers — it’s a lack of appreciation for what endless, life threatening, terror really means. No, it’s not a nuisance, it’s much much worse, and it’s something that no Western society would ever tolerate, even for a day.
As an at-home microcosm of Israel’s predicatment, I recall (with my dad’s suggestion) the 2002 ”Beltway sniper attacks,” where two sickos roamed around the Washington DC area shooting random people out of their van. As reported by the national media, including the Washington Post, “fear quickly spread throughout the community as news of the shootings spread. Many parents went to pick up their children at school early, not allowing them to take a school bus or walk home alone. Montgomery County Public Schools, District of Columbia Public Schools, and private schools went into a lockdown, with no recess or outdoor gym classes. Other school districts in the area also took precautionary measures, keeping students indoors.” (Wikipedia Beltway sniper attacks).
Furthermore, “during the period of the attacks, the North American media devoted enormous amounts of air time and newspaper space to each new attack. By the middle of October 2002, all-news television networks were providing live coverage of the aftermath of each new attack, with the coverage often lasting for hours at a time. The Fox show ‘America’s Most Wanted’ even devoted an entire episode to the shooters in hopes of aiding in their capture. (Ibid.)
In the end, these snipers (John Muhammed and Lee Malvo) murdered ten random people and wounded three. Was this an “amateur nuisance” in the Washington DC area? No of course not! It was urban terror, and it placed a whole city and its environs in a state of fear. It also was lethal. The police vigorously worked to apprehend the culprits, treating the case as priority #1, not as some nagging sideshow. I bring this all up as an example of the what such attacks can do to a community, and the appropriate lengths such a community will go to in order to eradicate them. It goes without saying that the Beltway sniper attacks, as horrible as they were, are nothing compared to the Hamas rocket attacks against Israel.
And lastly I strongly note, the Washington Post in publishing Kuttab’s sham, should be ashamed of itself. It accurately reported the fear and mayhem caused by the Beltway sniper attacks, but when it comes to Israel, it pathetically allows the publication of such garbage in its Op-Ed page.
